Welcome! Lesson 1: The Basics
Our mission is simple: we want to give you tips to help you mix a better drink. It doesn't take much more work or money, but you'll taste the difference and enjoy the experience.
The idea for this site and blog came a couple of years ago as I was mixing a batch of sweet & sour for margaritas. We had friends over, and they commented how good the margaritas were, and asked which mix I had used. When I told them it was homemade, they asked for the recipe and said I should share it on Facebook. After a few margaritas and more talk, the idea for a website, blog and "how-to" videos was born!
So, here we go with our first lesson: how to make a great mixed drink! A classic cocktail is made with five key components: a glass, ice, liquor, mixer and a garnish. Sounds easy, and it is, but let's walk through it so you can make it the best you've ever done!
Take a tall 10-12 ounce glass, and fill it with ice to just below the rim.
Put two fingers together and hold them to the base of the glass. Pour liquor to the top of your fingers (a little more than an inch).
Fill with your selected mixer.
(Optional) Garnish - a good bartender will typically use a wedge of lime with tonic or cola, and lemon with soda.
Drink and enjoy!
We'll go into details in later installments about liquors, mixers, garnishes, even ice and glassware!
Cheers!
